A Vision for Literacy
All students in Surry County Schools will graduate from high school with the ability to read, write, and communicate critically and thoughtfully with a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes.
The NC K-12 College and Career Reading Anchor Standards and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study will serve as our guides for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in all content areas. The goal of our literacy plan is to ultimately improve reading achievement for all students. Literacy skills, however, must be acquired, nurtured, and refined through research-based instruction and support. Although specific reading skills are taught in the early grades, reading and writing instruction must be ongoing and reinforced in all grades and in every content area.
